Introduction of Taipei Capital Ballet

Taipei Capital Ballet is the gardener of Taiwan's dance world. The dance troupe is based in Taipei and creates Taiwanese-style ballet that showcases local characteristics. Taipei Capital Ballet has both the foundation of transcendental elegance and exquisite art, as well as the characteristics of social criticism and humanistic concern. It not only provides a platform for domestic dancers to perform and create, but also strives to narrow the distance between ballet and the general public. The dance company subverts the common perception that ballet is "out of touch with the world", only performs "foreign classics", and is even "standardized" and "rigid". Discover that ballet is not only a display of the dancers’ art and technique, but also a manifestation of the choreographers’ creativity. The ballet practitioners use their unique elegance and tenacious perseverance to make light of heavy tasks and keep dancing. ----” Dr. Yu-ling Chao, Professor of Graduate Institute of Transdisciplinary Performing Arts at National Taiwan University of Arts

The company was founded in 1989 by Mr. Hsu Chin-Feng together with a group of ballet enthusiasts, and was officially renamed and established as “Taipei Capital Ballet” by Mr. Hsu in March 1990. Since its inception, the company has focused on the creation of original works as its primary direction. In order to maintain performance quality, the company initially operated as a full-time professional troupe, working five days a week (Monday to Friday), with daily training at 10:30 a.m. and rehearsals from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., a system that was sustained for six years. Due to subsequent financial constraints and challenges in recruiting professional dancers, the schedule was later adjusted to three working days per week. Nevertheless, the company has continued year-round training without interruption and remains dedicated to the long-term cultivation of a stable core of dancers.

In 2020, Taipei Capital Ballet won the 24th Taipei Culture Award. It is the first ballet troupe in Taipei to win the award.

In 2009, Taipei Capital Ballet won the 7th Taishin Performing Arts Award.

From 2008, Taipei Capital Ballet has been selected as Taiwan Top performing arts group of National Culture and Arts Foundation.

The troupe insists to hold nation touring performance at least once a year. So far, the troupe has already made more than seventy choreography and nearly a thousand times performance. The troupe tries to explore various styles of dance by taking ballet as basic element. One of the fabulous choreography is the work with Taiwan aboriginal dance element. The Company’s first performance abroad was on March, 1999.  The New York Times Chief Dance Critic, Anna Kisselgoff praised the performance as a romantic legend from Taiwan illustrating a full range of Taiwan imagery. In 2008, the magazine, Dance Europe, also has criticism—Making creative choreographies is Taipei Capital Ballet innovation style, and it represents the real Taiwan ballet by combining ballet with the local dance form, representing it with local metaphor and taking contemporary themes as topics.

To maintain their creativity, and variety, the Taipei Capital Ballet invites choreographers from different territories to collaborate with them and hopes the troupe will continue to thrive, and make its contribution to Taiwan Ballet.
